Behind the Scenes

Hollywood has long had a fascination with the Mob. From the Humphrey Bogart films of the 1940's to more recent films like Casino and Donnie Brasco. Crime, murder, respect, betrayal...cosa nostra. These are the things upon which great drama is built, and certain filmmakers were born to bring these stories to the big screen. Coppola. Scorcese. DePalma. Their names are synonymous with some of the best gangster pictures ever made. Roughcut.com wondered what might have happened if some of our favorite mob movies had been put in the hands of directors who, though talented in their own right, aren't quite as well suited for these stories of organized crime.

THE GODFATHER

The quintessential mob movie directed by Francis Ford Coppola is an epic in every sense of the word. But put into the hands of action director Michael Bay (Bad Boys, Armageddon, The Rock), the film might've played a little differently.

The table erupts with laughter.

HENRY

The table is silent. The blue and green creatures on the stage stop playing their instruments. A smile creeps onto Tommy's face. Did I mention his face would look good on the side of a can of soda. Maybe even a bag of potato chips.

TOMMY

Isa almost had 'im.

The table erupts in laughter and orders another round.

JONATHON

He does too many drugs. His friends are a bunch of thugs. But there's something about Tony.

FADE OUT

Needless to say, The Godfather, Goodfellas, and Scarface would probably not be deemed classics of the gangster genre if any of the above scenarios had come true. Though, with the success of their latest films, it wouldn't be surprising if Lucas, Bay, and the Farrelly Brothers were able to convince a studio to give them millions to bring their version of life in the Mafia to the big screen. Let's hope that doesn't happen. The rumors about a Godfather IV are frightening enough.

For a look at the more accurate portrayals of the mob in the movies, be sure to catch Family Values: The Mob In Movies premiering August 24th on TNT.
